So why did we come up with the name Cut Doctors...The symbol of the red and white barber pole is associated with the barber-surgeons, and evolved from the procedure of bloodletting. It was historically a representation of bloody bandages wrapped around a pole. The bottom cap of the pole was used a a basin to either catch the blood or to mix lather for shaving the face. The original pole had a brass wash basin at the top, which represented the vessel in which leeches were kept. Barbers also performed tooth extractions.
The pole itself represents the staff that the patient gripped during the procedure to make the veins stand out and encourage blood flow. The white bandages used to stop the flow of blood were then hung on the staff to dry. The stained bandages would then twist around the staff in the breeze, forming a red-and-white pattern.
